Real Talk About My Year So Far

Real Talk About My Year So Far

Can someone please tell me how we are less than ONE day away from flipping the calendar to February???  A whole month—poof, just like that!  11 more of those and we will be singing ‘Happy Birthday, Jesus!’  But we aren’t gonna focus on that…you’re welcome, haha!

I had planned to write a Grand Entrance into 2018 Post at the beginning of the year.  To share my word for the year and ask about yours! You’ll see once you read this post, why it’s taken so long.

ONE WORD CAN MEAN SO MUCH

God had given me my ‘word’ for 2018 mid-December 2017,  so I was excited to put the label on my chest and run with it January 1st.  I didn’t get very far with that plan.  Honestly, I’ve already gone through several of the typical New Year’s Resolution phases. Truth be told, I thought about asking for an exchange of my year’s word, although I’m pretty sure He would have said no.

The word God gave me for 2018 is EMBRACE.  He told me very simply, “I want you to embrace.  To embrace Me.  To embrace the season I have you in.  And to embrace the people I have placed in your life.”  Sounds easy right?  I thought so too until I realized what it really meant, what I would have to change and rearrange to make it happen.

{By definition in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, embrace means to clasp in the arms: hug, cherish, love.  To encircle, enclose.  To take up especially readily or gladly, to welcome}  GULP! It’s amazing how one word can mean so much.

EMBRACE ME

When he said, “embrace Me”, I knew exactly what he meant.  More time set aside for Him, more prayer and more studying of His word.  Simply put, He was asking for more intimacy.  It pricked my heart because I knew that if He had to ask, I wasn’t where I needed to be.  Immediately, the accuser rushed in with thoughts of guilt and whispered the lie that I can’t possibly lead anyone because I can’t even keep myself where I’m supposed to be.

That lie was a perfect example of what Paul tells us to demolish in  2 Corinthians 10:5.

“We tear down arguments, and every presumption set up against the knowledge of God; and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (BSB)  I see it now, but because I didn’t immediately take those thoughts captive and make them obedient to God, I allowed them to take root and it didn’t take long for poisonous fruit to pop up.

Just like a good Father would do, God let me taste the fruit I allowed my thoughts to create, but right on time He stretched out His hand and pulled me out of the pit and put my feet back on solid ground.  (Thank You, Lord!)

We have to remember, if it’s not good, it’s NOT God! -thanks Julie!

EMBRACE THE SEASON I HAVE YOU IN

That statement was also correctional.  He wants me to focus on what He has me doing right now, not constantly looking ahead to what’s next, but what’s happening now.  Don’t get me wrong, God wants me to dream big, to have goals and to achieve them but if I focus totally on my future, I will miss the gifts and the growth that is in today.

God recently brought a friend into my life that was unexpected. (A total gift!)  It’s been such a blessing watching her learn and grow in the Lord.  I assume that when it started, she thought she needed me but it’s turned out that I needed her just as much!  As excited as I am about what God has in store for me later, I’m thankful for where He has me-right here, right now, in this season walking with her.

This scripture just came to my mind, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”  We need not despise the beginning of something, but settle in and then force ourselves to truly enjoy the season we are in.

My mom used to say, “Don’t put the cart before the horse” If she were here I know that’s exactly what she would say.  (Noted,  Mom!)  This will be easier said than done, but I’m determined.  It will take discipline for me to reel myself back into obedience when my flesh tries to pull me away from it.

EMBRACE THE PEOPLE I HAVE PLACED IN YOUR LIFE

Ahhhh, the people!  I’m abundantly blessed when it comes to this category!   Good people are one of the best parts of life this side of heaven.  If you have people that you can trust with your heart, even if it’s just one, you are blessed!  On that note, have you ever noticed how easy it is to take advantage of the people you love the most?  That’s the last thing I want to do so leaning into this one is a must. And like the other two, it will come with it’s own challenges.

For one, social media!  What a time thief!  It’s supposed to connect us but if you think about it, it’s more effective at separating us, instead.  In relationship we need connection, physical and emotional.  It takes time and effort but nothing is better than a love tank that’s full.  And nothing is worse than seeing a look of disappointment on the face of someone I love because I missed what they said because I was looking at my phone.

I want the people in my life to feel like a priority and to feel loved and valued…the way God makes me feel.  Yes, I have my work cut out for me.  But, I’m trusting the Holy Spirit to lead me step by step.

So now that I’ve filled you in on what God wants for me for 2018, tell me about you!  What’s your focus word?  How’s it going so far?  Tell me in the comments, I can’t wait to hear about it.
