Our Individuality Is Necessary

Our Individuality Is Necessary

This post has been in the works for a long time.  Not so much the writing of it but the time it took for me to realize the truth of it for myself.  Growing up, I had a hard time finding a place where I fit in.  The enemy had me convinced that being anything was better than being me, so I tried to change my identity many times over the years.  What a lie that was!  But, now I know the truth.  Satan was afraid of who God created me to be so he tried to rob me of my identity, my individuality.

Have you ever felt this way?  If yes, I’m glad you’re here because we’re about to dig deep to uncover the truth.  It’s time we embrace who we are and purpose to let God work through us, starting now.

LET’S START FROM THE BEGINNING

Psalm 139:13-16 will forever be one of my favorite passages in the Bible.  The scriptures drip of love as they expound on the intricate details of our creation.  Verse 13 says that God ‘knitted us together in our mother’s womb’.  Take a second to think about that.  The One that spoke everything we see into existence, took the time to knit us together, piece by piece.  I love that David chose the word ‘knitted’ because it gives a clear picture of God, thoughtfully and carefully creating us.  16 says that before even one of our days came to be, He prepared them all.

It’s clear that we weren’t just a passing thought.  Actually verse 14 says that we were fearfully and wonderfully made!  God put a lot of thought into creating us and deciding when to put us on the earth.  This is why it’s vital that we realize-our individuality is necessary to fulfill His plan for our lives.  Ephesians 2:10 tells us that we are God’s masterpiece.  That He created us anew in Christ so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.  Did you catch that?  We were created for good things(for a purpose)!

I know that the word purpose can sometimes be daunting, but don’t get overwhelmed thinking about the big picture.  I want you to think about your life right now.

FINDING PURPOSE WHERE YOU ARE

What season of life are you in?  Do you have little ones running circles around you?  Sweet mamas, I know it’s hard, I’ve been there.  You’re probably at your wits end most of the time but don’t let the stress of it sidetrack you.  YOU are shaping the next generation!   Think about it.  You could be changing the diapers of a future president or the next great evangelist!  Know this-God sees you and He will give you the grace you need every day. So get excited, you’ve got this!

Do you teach?  I realize that you come in contact with a sea of students every day but I want you to keep your eyes peeled for the ‘one’.  The one that’s silently crying out for love.  Ask God to give you discernment and He will.  A tender hug or a word of encouragement could completely change the course of his or her life.  You could be a game changer!

Are you an artist?  The creative type?  Maybe tattoos and bright colored hair? Good!  That’s your thing for a reason and God loves it!  There are people that need to see that you can be who you are and still serve Jesus.  Don’t change a thing.

Have you been delivered from homosexuality or drug addiction?  Your testimony has the potential to breakthrough to people that have no hope.  Don’t hide your light under a bushel.  Let it shine!  God set you free so that you can lead others to freedom!  Slow down and pay attention to the ones that cross your path and get excited because I have no doubt that God is already setting it up! Shine Baby Shine!!

My point in saying all this is that God needs all of us to reach the world and we will accomplish it in our everyday lives, if we surrender to the leading of the Holy Spirit.  But if we let the enemy convince us that we have to be like someone else to make an impact, we give up the beauty of OUR creation.

No matter how old we are, where we live or what we do, we come in contact with people every day.  We are God’s way of infiltrating the earth for His glory.  We are His hands and feet.

EVERY DETAIL MATTERS TO GOD

I thought I was proud of who I was until this happened recently.  I had plans to meet up with some new acquaintances.  They are believers too but aren’t very vocal about it, kind of conservative I guess you could say which we all know is quite different from me.(wink)  When I was getting dressed for the meet up I thought, “Okay, I need to be on my best behavior, tone down my ‘relate everything to the Bible’ talk and wear something that a good Christian would wear’…  HA! It only took about 2 seconds for God to pipe up! He said, “Excuse me, Polly…what exactly is ‘best behavior’?  Do you mean make yourself blend in with them?  And why would you change anything about the way you talk about Me? I love that about you!  And have I ever convicted you about your distressed jeans???”  …crickets…

What was I thinking?  Why would I change anything about me for someone else?  I mean after all, if I did that, they wouldn’t even be meeting me.  I love that God was so quick to correct me.  It showed me that not only does he love me exactly the way I am but that he will use me exactly the way I am. It turns out, they loved me, my bible talk and my distressed jeans!  But even if they hadn’t, I knew that God had my back.  {Side note, I was real excited to know he wasn’t concerned about my jeans!}

Are you getting the picture?  You were created just the way you are on purpose for a purpose!  Your gender, race, personality and season of life have you in perfect position to do the job God has for you to do.  You have a unique sound that can’t be replicated.  You are an expression of God’s creativity!  He wants to use you-right now to carry His Presence into the lives of others.

I hope that you’ll let the truths of this post sink deep and echo in your ears until you believe them. Please, don’t waste another day trying to be someone else, BE YOU! And say this, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made and God is ready to use me right now!”

Now, tell me about you!  I want to know, what’s your position for influence and are you up for the challenge?
