Peace in the Middle of a Storm

Peace in the Middle of a Storm

Peace in the middle of a storm is something I can talk about because I’ve experienced it many times in the past and I’m experiencing it now.  There’s something that we learn in the storms that we can’t learn anywhere else.  If we don’t despise the valleys of life, they will reveal a side of God that we can’t find or see without them.  If we can get to a place where we really trust him with our lives, we will experience Him as the Father, Redeemer, Savior and Friend that he is.  If we only experience him in the good times, we would be robbed of an intimacy that can only be found in times of trouble.

What’s your storm?  Is it a wayward child?  Sickness?  A broken relationship?  Something that you’ve been praying for and don’t see a hint of an answer yet?   Or are you fighting to break free from sin, tired and weary and on the verge of giving in again?  I’ve experienced each of these and am here to encourage you, there is a place where you can go to escape it all.  You can stay as long as you want and when you leave, you will be changed.  You’ll be able to see through the clouds to the rainbow and you’ll notice that hope was planted into your heart while you were there.

This place?  The Presence of God.

How do you get there?  I’m about to tell you and I think you’ll be surprised! I’m sitting here smiling, wishing I could be on the other end of this connection so I could see your reaction…

The pathway to the Presence of God is  paved with PRAISE!  When we stop what we’re doing, get our eyes off our circumstances and praise God, it not only confuses the devil but it ushers us right up into the Throne-Room of heaven.  I know you’ve heard the term ‘praise him in the storm’.  This is nothing new, it’s just something that we don’t think about like we should.

David, who was called a man after God’s own heart, is a perfect example of this and I believe that his heart of praise is one thing that tied him to that title.  He knew God like we should all aspire to.  If you haven’t read the book of Psalm, you should!  You’ll find him praising God no matter what came against him.  One example of that is Psalm 18:3 “I call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.”  He Knew!

Here’s the definition of praise, found in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.  praise:  to say or write good things about (someone or something) :  to express approval of (someone or something) : to express thanks to or love and respect for (God).

You wanna kick it up a notch?  DANCE!   Yes, dance!!! {{Like nobody’s watching!}}  David did that, too!  And for the triple threat, SING!  Are you smiling yet?  Good!  But I’m not kidding!  IN the middle of your storm, sing and dance, praise the Lord and watch the mountain crumble into the sea!  You will feel the weight lift off your shoulders and your spirit will start to sing, “I’ve got the joy, joy , joy, joy down in my heart!”  If you don’t believe me, try it!  God is smiling too, hoping that you’ll take a chance on him!

Jesus said it so plainly in Matthew 11.  “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”  He’s telling us, let me take your burden and you take mine.  Yours is heavy, mine is light.  When we say no to the pressure of our earthly circumstances and say yes to Jesus, he will take our load and give us rest.

Jesus knew the power of praise.  1 Corinthians 11:24 says, “And when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you.”  Y’all, this was during the last supper.  He was talking about giving up his body (being crucified) for US and he praised God by giving thanks.  What an example of praising God in the storm!

I experienced the effect of it this morning.  Off and on for the past 3 weeks, I’ve suffered with headaches like I’ve never had before.  One day I got so sick from the pain, I had to go to the doctor to get relief.  I don’t understand why it’s happening and why it keeps dragging on but I know that it won’t last forever and that God will see me through it.

When I sat down for my quiet time this morning, my head was pounding.  I always start with praise and worship…music–I have church, y’all!   My go-to is Bethel Music on Youtube.  Their worship leaders LOVE Jesus and are so anointed.

My head felt like it was in a vise but that wasn’t keeping me from my daily dose of Presence.  I sang my heart out with tears streaming down my face and just like he always does, God showed up.  I felt his Presence like wind rush over me.  I knew my head was hurting but the praise lifted me above my circumstance.  I went from crying to dancing and praising my Daddy just like I always do.  This is what moves his heart!  When we are broken and hurting but we know that because he is worthy, we praise him anyway.

I invite you to this place of peace in the storm.  To ‘come’ to Jesus, to learn from him and let him take your heavy load.  In the place of praise, your faith will rise up and you’ll have the grace you need to face each day and when it’s time, you will get your breakthrough.

It’s a promise!  Will you take me up on it?  Here is one of my favorite worship songs to get you started. Enjoy!

In the storm right along with you,

Love, love!! It’s so important to just look up when so many things are looking down. While in the slums of Nairobi, I saw the poverty, the sickness, the need. But I also saw kids and families singing and dancing their praises like I’ve never seen before! I thought wow, we could really learn from this. Put so much focus into God that your worries can’t help but feel inferior. Love your post ! Thanks for sharing!
