We Have a Choice to Make

We Have a Choice to Make

I know I can’t be the only one that has moments where I think and sometimes say, “Thanks Adam, Thanks Eve!”, with a sigh of disdain… I’m pretty embarrassed for admitting it now because as I type it I realize how proud and judgmental it is.

When I was walking the dog early this morning, I was thinking about how we are faced with the same choice they were, day in and day out.  We have the voice and promises of God on one hand and the voice  and tricks of the enemy on the other.  Good or bad, life or death.  We have a choice to make and I think if we’re honest we can say that we go along with the latter more than we should.

Things happen so fast that our minds start unraveling in a split second and in that moment the enemy capitalizes on our weakness.  He knows that he only has a tiny window of time to whisper his poisonous lies into our ears and believe me, he doesn’t hesitate.  He’s very strategic in his attack, so we have to be prepared and ready to fight back.

That’s the target of today’s post, learning to recognize his tactics and then choosing to apply what the Word says.  If we can master this strategy, we will experience peace, even in the midst of the worst suffering and will be able to see the hand of God moving on our behalf.

Whichever voice we choose to listen to will plant a seed in our heart.  Once the seed has penetrated the soil it will produce fruit.  You know the old adage, “Be careful what you think because your thoughts become your words and your words become your actions”?  It’s so true but that’s not the end of it.  It goes on to say, “your actions become your habits, your habits become your character and your character becomes your destiny”

It’s easy to see that if we don’t follow the instruction in 2 Corinthians 10, we are headed for trouble!  We are given clear instruction on what we’re to do when a thought enters our mind that doesn’t line up with the Word of God.  It’s actually a form of spiritual warfare.  {Verse 5 “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”}

I love that!  We have the ability to capture every thought, examine it and decide if it gets to stay or if it has to go!  One translation actually says, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God” [BOOM!]  I don’t know about you, but I get a pretty amazing visual when I think about demolishing the lies of the devil!  Once we crush the lie at the gate of our ears, we can then bring it to Jesus and let him handle the rest.

Bottom line:  If the thoughts we have are laced with fear or intimidation, condemnation or guilt…or anything that makes us feel abandoned or unloved-it’s not the voice of God so we have to demolish it!

Now, the next step is just as important as the first.  We have to replace the lie that was spoken with the truth.  If you happen to know a scripture that corresponds, great!  Use it!  But if not, here are a few simple and easy- to-remember truths that we can claim as children of God:

  • I am loved (Jeremiah 31:3)
  • I am free (Galatians 5:1)
  • God has a good plan for my life (Jeremiah 29:11)
  • I will trust him no matter what I see (Hebrews 11:1)
  • He will never leave me or forsake me (Deuteronomy 31:6)
  • I know the end of the story, and it’s good! (Revelation 20:10)

Can I get an amen???!!!  Yeaaaaaaah!  Jesus died so we could be free, y’all!  We need to remember that!  It’s time to stand guard at the gate of our ears and refuse the lies of the enemy once and for all!  Are you with me?  Are you ready to take your thoughts captive?  I am! Let’s do this!!

If by chance, you’re reading this and you’ve never given your heart to God and accepted Jesus as your Savior and want to, you can do that now!  Romans 10:9 says, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” If you prayed this prayer, welcome to the family!
